Our digestive tract is layered with a slippery mucous that usually defends against acid. But if the quantity of acid is augmented or the quantity of mucus is reduced, we could develop an ulcer.

One reason of peptic ulcer is a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori that usually resides in the mucous layer of the stomach lining and protects its walls from acids.

Usually, this bacterium is not harmful for stomach but in certain cases it can cause inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach resulting in ulcer.

The reason of how H. pylori infection spreads in the stomach is not very clear.

But it can be transferred to one person to another by physical contact. Patients also catch this bacterium through contaminated food water.

Regular use of painkillers can also disrupt the normal functioning of the stomach lining by causing gastrointestinal ulcers.

Some other medicines containing steroids, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and low doses of aspirin can also damage the inner lining of the stomach.

There are some typical symptoms of peptic ulcer.

Treatment and Diagnosis


Peptic ulcers can easily be diagnosed by the physician who can examine the stomach and its related organs by touching the stomach and checking the breath of patient for H. pylori presence.

Endoscopy can also be done with patients of chronic gastro-ulcers, or those who are facing some blockage in the stomach.

In mild to moderate cases, antibiotics and gastro-kinetic medicines are prescribed to reduce the symptoms of the ulcers as well as repair the lining of the stomach by reducing the production of acidic juices in the stomach.

In extreme cases, when stomach walls have completely damaged and holes are visible then doctors perform surgical treatment by taking patch from intestines and pasting it on the stomach walls and lining.
